I preside over Lewisham's Citizenship Ceremonies whenever I possibly can as I think it's vital to welcome new citizens and celebrate our shared values.

As I looked out at the dozens of new British citizens I couldn't help but be impressed by their obvious pride and excitment. It reminded me that Britishness - although not easy to define - is something very special that should never be taken for granted.
