A difficult, personal decision

On Friday night I informed a packed meeting of Labour Party members of my decision to stand down at the next election.

I realise this might come as a shock to some and I want to let you know that it has not been an easy decision. Indeed, it is only in the past few months have I realised that this is what I want to do.

I have been your MP for 17 years I think it is time for me to do other things and for someone new to bring fresh ideas. It is important that you know that this is not a political decision, simply a personal one. I shall continue to support the Labour Party and Government completely.

I have enjoyed the privilege of serving in Government under both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and I firmly believe we have achieved great things as a Labour Government - just look at the transformation in the Health Service, in our schools and local communities. No other Government would have introduced the minimum wage and no other Government would have been as committed to abolishing child poverty both here and abroad.

Of course our work is not yet done. There is much more to do. I remain as convinced now as I did when I stood before you in 1992 and indeed as I did when I joined the Labour Party in 1975 that only a Labour Government can bring about true equality, justice and fairness to our communities and beyond.

This is an entirely personal decision and I know I shall be leaving this job with a local party stronger than ever, keen to continue our successes, and I’ll be with them all the way. I’m not going anywhere. My home is here in the heart of Lewisham East and it is where I intend to remain.
