Hither Green | |
Hither Green lies south east of Lewisham, on the site of a hamlet from the Middle Ages called Romborough. This hamlet had not been inhabited since the time of the Black Death and lay in an area covered by woodland. By the early 19th century the Hither Green area had been turned into farmland and nurseries, punctuated by fine countryside residences with splendid views. The development of Hither Green started in the 1860s but was put into overdrive in 1896 (just after the opening of Hither Green station) by Archibald Cameron Corbett who built over 3,000 houses in the area. The estate had its own schools, churches and library. It even had its own entrance to the train station. The area's most significant building is the Park Hospital complex of 1897. For nearly a century it served as a sanatorium, hospital and geriatric hospital until its recent closure. Behind the high walls grow many trees including the largest Indian Bean tree in the UK.
