Welcome to my regular column for my constituents: 26th November 2007

Amnesty ExhibitionIf there was a theme running through my activities this week then I would say that it was a concern for the most vulnerable people in our community. On Saturday I attended an Amnesty exhibition at Lewisham library. One of the particular topics I talked to attendees about was the awful practice of people trafficking.

I have also been in close contact with Deptford Action Group for the Elderly (DAGE) in support of their campaign to ban doorstep selling on the part of utility companies. It is a technique that is open to abuse and that leaves the elderly especially vulnerable.

That said, there are good news stories to be had in Lewisham. Last Friday I visited a home in the constituency that had benefitted from the EAGA/Warm Home Campaign project to insulate and improve housing in our area. The home I visited had received a replacement gas boiler and draughtproofing and the resident told me that it had made a real difference to him and to his heating bills.
