Lewisham Town Centre | |
Lewisham High Street and the busy area around the Clock Tower are centres of activity for the people of Lewisham. The Clock Tower was completed in 1900 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, and there is now a daily market at this end of The High Street. The town centre was bombed in 1944, and so has been extensively rebuilt and the bombing is commemorated by a plaque outside the modern Lewisham shopping centre. In 1977, the Battle of Lewisham saw the biggest street battle against fascists since the Battle of Cable Street in 1936. Today, the Lewisham police station, which opened in 2004, is one of the largest in Europe. Lewisham is a major transport hub, with its own bus station, railway station and the southern boundary of the Docklands Light Railway. A couple of parks are based in Lewisham including Hilly Fields with is home to a picnic area, children’s playground, three tennis courts, bowling club and a regular farmers market. To mark the Millennium a stone circle of twelve large granite stones and two tall shadow-casting stones have been erected in the park. Art lovers will enjoy the Lewisham Arthouse or the Limelight Gallery in Lewisham Library which also includes a local history and archives centre, a reference library and a tourist information centre. | |
