Hither Green Cemetery

Founded in 1873, Hither Green Cemetery sprawls along the side of Verdant Lane.

With its well-tended grounds and attractive chapel, it has a calm and tranquil atmosphere. Dotted with mature trees including oak, copper beech, yew and horse chestnut, it provides a good habitat for woodland birds and, more unusually, a resident flock of ring-necked parakeets who feed and roost in the area. In 1943 the nearby Sandhurst Road School was bombed, killing 38 children and 6 members of staff. There is a mass grave for 33 victims of this horrific disaster.

                      Hither Green

A well-ordered and tidy space, the trees and shrubs do not run wild as in some cemeteries. In a built-up area it provides a pleasant change from the busy roads, a tranquil spot open 10am to 4pm daily. In the far corner is Railway Children Walk, a short passage named in memory of the author Edith Nesbit who lived in nearby Baring Road. She was a founding member of the Fabian Society in the 1890s, and did charity work among the poor of Deptford.
