I was born Bridget Corr on 28th December 1952, the daughter of James Corr, a joiner and Bridget Corr, a clerical worker.
I contested Croydon Central in 1987, and became the Member of Parliament for Lewisham East on 9th April 1992, overturning a Tory majority of 4,846 to a Labour majority of 1,095. This was increased to 12,127 in the 1997 general election and 9,003 in the general election of 2001. In the general election in May 2005 my majority was 6,751
I was appointed as a Government Whip by Tony Blair MP after the 1997 General Election, taking into government the job I had held for two years in the Opposition. I have since held several posts: Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Minister for Trade (1998-99), PPS to the Lord Chancellor (1999-2001) and Member of the Home Affairs Select Committee (2001-2003). I rejoined the government in 2003 after being appointed to the Government Whips Office. On 9th May I was appointed as Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the department for Constitutional Affairs( now The Ministry of Justice). Currently my responsibilities are: Reform of electoral administration, legal services,legal services complaints, commissioner/legal services Ombudsman, asylum and immigration, devolution and regional policy and the Northern Ireland court service.
