Welcome to my regular column for constituents: September 26th 2007
Putting health and education centre-stage, he promised cleaner hospitals and one-to-one tuition for 600,000 children in English and Maths. It was also a speech where he explained his vision for Britain - a strong country confident in itself and ready for the challenges of the future. Perhaps surprisingly for someone often percieved as a private man, he also talked about his upbringing, the values he inherited from his mother and father, and the adversity he overcame as a young man. Most of all he articulated what many of us already knew; that he's a safe pair of hands in a turbulent and rapidly changing world. The Young Mayor of Lewisham, Siobhan Bell, was also in Bournemouth yesterday and hosted a very successful event on 'Young people and policy-making'. The other main piece of Lewisham news was Labour's very strong performance at the Whitefoot by-election. The Labour candidate, Skip Amrani, managed to achieve a 7% swing whilst significantly reducing the Liberal Democrat vote in Whitefoot. Whilst the result wasn't what we wanted, I am very pleased to see such strong support for Labour and would like to thank all 901 of you who voted for Skip. Finally, I have added some new videos to the website that might interest you. For anyone who missed it, I've posted Gordon Brown's speech. I'd also like to recommend the video of Alan Johnson, the Secretary of State for Health, responding to questions on the NHS.

I'm
currently away in Bournemouth at the Labour Party conference and will be back in Lewisham tomorrow morning. All the talk here is of the fine job Gordon Brown is doing as our new Prime
Minister and, in particular, the speech he made introducing himself to the nation.
